SAVE THE BIKE KITCHEN!
For the past 24 years The Bike Kitchen has been providing affordable and accessible transportation to UBC students, staff and community members. The COVID-19 pandemic has been financially disastrous and we are struggling to make ends meet.
You can play a big part in helping us to provide a safe, welcoming space that promotes cycling as a sustainable & affordable mode of transportation!
Why do we need help?
Since March 2020 we have faced:
- A four month shop closure despite being declared an Essential Service
- Fewer customers on campus because of online learning
- Global supply chain disruptions and bike part shortages
These huge financial hits are more than we can handle alone and we need your help!
What will we do with this increased support?
In response to the pandemic, we’ve had to become a service-only shop with limited programs. Supporting volunteerism, education and DIY repairs, as well as access to affordable used parts has always been at the core of our mission, so this was a very painful transition for us. However, it kept our staff & customers safe while allowing us to continue limited operations. With your support we can refill our inventory, return to programs, reopen DIY and build stability for the future.
Your support would help us get out of Covid survival mode and back to all the cool stuff we were doing in the pre-pandemic days:
- Tool rentals and Do-It-Yourself instruction every Mon-Sat
- Used part & accessory sales
- Volunteer Nights every week
- Access Nights twice a month with free tool rental & instruction for attendees
- Women & Queer Night
- Pride Night
- Educational Classes: Learn about your bike and how to maintain it during our 4 week courses
- Kids Bike Library program: Free bicycles for young children which they can trade-in as they outgrow them
- Bici Libre program: Bicycles for migrant farm workers in the Fraser Valley who face major transportation challenges
- Free wheelchair repairs
- Free mobility aid & stroller repairs

UBC Student Fee referendum:
From Monday March 7th, 2022 to Friday March 11th, 2022 UBC students will be voting on whether or not to increase The Bike Kitchen fee by $3.86, bringing us from $1.14 to $5. We will need all the help getting the required 4762 “Yes” votes required, please tell your fellow students about the work we do! Details can be found on the AMS Elections page
