This is my cousin Tracy and her daughter, Sydney before the accident. Below is a picture of Sydney in the ambulance and another shot after they stopped some of the bleeding and cleaned her up. Sydney is a 21 year old college student who was severely injured during a softball game. She took a softball to the mouth! The impact broke a bone in her upper jaw bone and fractured her front teeth above the gum line. Her teeth were at a 45 degree angle going back into her mouth. Emergency doctors placed a stint in and put her teeth back in place to try and save them.
The surgeon called it a catastrophic injury. The teeth can not be saved. Sydney had to wait 2 months for the broken bone to heal before she could have surgery. They grafted a bovine bone to her upper jaw and put in titanium plates for her to be able to have implants. Ye s, we do joke with her that she now has a cow bone in her head!
It has been an 8 month long process of waiting for the broken bone to heal, dental surgeries, dental work, making new teeth, wearing plastic teeth in between, etc. Her mom thought everything would be covered by medical insurance, but the medical insurance doesn't cover any of the costs! They say it is dental procedures. Sydney's dental only covered $1500.
Sydney has a team of specialists (orthodontists, surgeons and dentists) working on and for her. The costs are now approaching $19000 out of pocket. Since insurance wouldn't cover, expenses had to be paid up front. Sydney's mother has maxed out her credit card to cover expenses and the payments are more than she can afford. Sydney's mom is a single mother of two kids in college and works as a probation officer during the day and works nights and weekends as a server in a restaurant to make ends meet.
