Save Sable’s Life

Donation protected
Sable desperately needs our help!  Her chance to live literally depends upon continued medical attention, to be one of very few cats to survive Cytox.  I’m praying for help from animal loving friends to help continue her veterinarian expenses so she has a fighting chance.

If you can’t contribute, please please share with your animal loving friends too.

So much to say about her situation (details to follow), but most importantly, I’m praying for help to keep her treatment plan going for as long as it takes.  She deserves this chance to live.  God bless you!

Sable is one of several strays I inherited as porch cats when I moved here two years ago.  I’ve had them all spayed & neutered, fed, loved & provided shelter & warmth.  I’d bring them all inside, yet already have many.

Last week, I noticed her weakened state & an odd orange color around the edge of her mouth.  She’s let me pet her, yet was always afraid to be held, so I couldn’t get ahold of her & she disappeared for two days.

Then I saw her Wednesday the 25th, lying motionless on her side in the yard.  She was barely alive & I got her into a carrier & to Lakeside Veterinary Hospital in Carbondale.

Her body temperature was 93°.  Normal for a cat is 101. 5° to 102.5°, she was no longer making her own red blood cells, breathing irregularly, pupils dilated, and her skin, paw pads, insides of her ears & mouth were positively orange from jaundice.  You can see in the picture I took of her just yesterday, how yellow her skin still is!

They suspected Cytox ~ also called Bobcat Fever.  There is a new epidemic in our area of Lonestar ticks who have bitten infected bobcats and transmit this almost always fatal disease to cats.

Sable’s only hope was to bring up her temperature, have a blood transfusion, several medications, and all the critical care involved in feeding her through a tube in her nostril, hydrating her, oxygen, and daily blood work to check her levels.

I have visited her daily (and held her!!), as the entire staff has been amazed with her small advances.  Saturday she actually got up from her resting spot to move to her piddle pad, and yesterday she groomed herself!

Today brings a new medication to entice her to eat orally.   She is far from being out of the woods, and will prayerfully become the third cat they’ve been able to save from this horrific disease.

We’ve been so blessed that there’s a gentleman at SIU studying Cytox who was able to diagnose her, and yesterday there was even a veterinary specialist visiting the practice who concurred with her treatment plan.

This has been an intense journey.  Lakeside has blessed Sable by actually donating her transfusion (which would have cost $800), along with some of her medications, and as of Saturday also her daily oxygen chamber!

Despite this wonderful support, our additional bill at this point is over $2500 in treatment, and climbing several hundred each day, with the likelihood of several more days in ICU before us this week as Sable continues her battle.

This sweet girl had one litter of kittens & then nursed an orphan litter so that they could live, so I am betting she has a few extra credit lives under her furry belt at this point!

Won’t you please consider helping with her expenses?  I’m happy to share invoices copies ~  unfortunately, the hospital does not accept donations directly.  Those who know me, will believe in their hearts with confidence that this is 100% legitimate, and understand how my heart aches for this precious cat.

I will also post updates on her care and progress for those of you who will bless her with your prayers!

Educationally speaking, you need to know that Cytox cannot infect dogs, however dogs can bring ticks inside to indoor cats and they can be infected as well.
