Save our Summer Camp in Anacostia!
I know people don't like to use the word lucky, especially when they work really hard. I understand; but I do feel lucky. I feel lucky that I've got a second person who is involved in every way a person can be to help raise our kids. I'm really never on my own - financially, emotionally - I've got my husband to help carry the load. It's such a privilege really, and I consider myself lucky when the biggest challenge in deciding which summer program to send my kids to isn't cost, but all kinds of other intangibles.
For so many moms in Anacostia, there's great struggle in finding an affordable option also close by that provides a safe learning-based environment for their children. That's where Urban Ed's Lil Bitties program comes in.
At Urban Ed, we use technology that is aligned with the national standards to help low performing children succeed in school. Generally, when children enroll in our program they are only about 40% ready for their grade. However, after completing our program they are between 75-80% ready. This advancement, which happens in our 5 week summer program, has been instrumental in helping many children stay ahead in school.
For some children, the meal that they receive in our program is the only meal they will eat that day. Our program allows kids to have exposure to more opportunity. They have access to a computers (how many of our children have access to multiple Apple products!), which many don't have in their homes. And, last but not least, we encourage them to see the enormous potential they have within themselves.
At $1,500 per child, this program will cost $37K this summer. I figure that we can start here...cover the cost for 3 children and a little extra.
