Save Oreo & Bullet from chains

Donation protected
Oreo and Bullet have lived their lives on chains in Antigua and I'm determined to change that.

Bullet is 11 years old and Oreo is only 7 months. Life is a sad and lonely existence for these dogs, and with Oreo's still being a puppy, action must be taken soon. Their situation broke my heart, and I cannot stand by and allow this to be their life.

Their story!

Bullet was placed in the back of the garden in his kennel, barely able to move around and forgotten about. He was terrified of me when I first approached him. His kennel faces the fence so he hasn't had any exposure to humans, or much of anything for that matter. He sees a fence, bushes and his kennel, but little else, his only companions are the ever-present chain and hunger. Having no exposure to the world has left him damaged and terrified. He let me get close enough to feed him chicken every day, but I didn't want to push his boundaries. He had accepted life on a chain and had given up trying to explore any meaningful bond dogs have evolved to have with humans. He was defeated. But slowly with a lot of time and patience, I managed to spark up his curiosity and get to know him a little, which is all I could ask of this terrified but brave soul. It was heart warming watching him break down his barriers and learn to let a person in.

Oreo was chained to the porch, so I had full view of her. Every day I would wake up to her crying and pacing back and forth. I even realized she was sleeping in her own pee as she had nowhere to go. I started to visit Oreo daily to give her some stimulation. She's an Akita mix so she's incredibly intelligent and learn’t commands so quickly. She was so eager for some attention and needed a release with all her pent-up energy. As I was going through a hard time myself, it became very therapeutic for me to spend time with Oreo on the porch and I hope she enjoyed every moment of our time together as much as I did. If she ever spotted me on the veranda, she would always lock eyes with me, begging for me to come over. In fact, one night she managed to escape and ran round to my garden and waited at the bottom of the stairs for me to come out. My heart melted! I knew at that moment we had a strong bond, and she came to me for help when she could have ran for her freedom.

The Rescuing Begins!

After hearing their whining and crying all day and night, I couldn't take it anymore and asked the owners if I could have them. They agreed. I can’t tell you how excited I was! They would finally have their freedom! But then I realized I had nowhere to keep them. The property I was staying at had no fences and the owner said they couldn't come inside. So, I had to leave them on their chains until I could figure something out.

(Oreo on her first walk the day I haggled her freedom)

I contacted rescues and they advised me the best life for Antigen dogs is to leave the island where they can go to a society that views animals differently. Where they can find they're forever home. The rescues are all full with dogs who have similar or worse stories. So, I've taken it upon myself to get them out of there.

My dog trainer gave me daily advise on how to approach bullet on his terms and gain his trust. I owe so much to Nigel, because without him I would have been clueless on how to handle bullet and show him some humans can be trusted. He also agreed out of the kindness of his heart to train bullet when he gets to the UK free of charge so he can become adoptable!

I contacted a grooming/kennel establishment and had Oreo picked up. I want to get Bullet there next but it's going to cost quite a bit since Bullet cannot fly until next year, due to having heart worm. He's being treated but due to his age needed a slower working medication to keep him safe. Lillian has helped me every step of the way with the passport, vets/meds and getting Oreo ready to fly. Bullet will be going to a local rescue where Nigel and I can help rehabilitate him and Oreo will be joining my family!

So, let's get down to how you can help!

Both dogs need to fly from Antigua to the UK.

Oreo in December 2020. Bullet in May 2021

To pass quarantine and get accepted into the UK they both need to have a dog passport. This requires:

150 ec - Rabies jab or booster (21 days quarantine after rabies jab is done)

250 ec - Snaptest - Check for worms

180ec - Microchip - has to be identified by ISO (International Organisation for Standardization)

Oreo will need a kennel 40x27x30 to legally fly in the cargo which will give her the space she needs to lay down and sit up and stand. - 1,060ec (x2 for both dogs)

Due to covid 19, flights keep getting cancelled, which puts flight costs up and down constantly anywhere between £300-£1000.
( I'm waiting for confirmation on exact prices)

Boarding Oreo 1 month- 600ec

Boarding Bullet 5months - 3,000ec

Vet costs

Spay x2 - 150ec

antibiotics - 20ec

Scram 1 bottle Bullet - 100ec (x4)

120 doxylydine Bullet - 120 ec

sedation - 20ec

Consult - 125ec

Bullets total cost = 5,095ec/ £1,407 without flights

Oreos total cost = 2,170ec/ £598.16 without flights

= £2,005.16 (we're estimating around 2k for bullet and 1.4k for oreo once flights are added)

Costs billed so far:

As you can see this is going to be pricey. And I need all the help I can get. Oreo and Bullet deserve loving homes. To be surrounded by a family that can give them attention, a proper diet and exercise, and a place to heal and feel safe for the first time in their lives. They deserve that fighting chance that we can give them to have a happy life. Antigen native dogs can live up to 17, so Bullet still has a long time left in him, and Oreo has her entire life ahead of her.

I know times are hard because of Covid 19, so all I ask is a donation that matches a cup of coffee. Even £1 would go so far. Please donate and save Oreo and Bullet. Help me save these wonderful animals, help me unite them with a family that will love them, and give them the life they deserve.
