She was diagnosed with a very rare disease 7 years ago, called Gorham-Stout and Lymphangiomatosis (presence of chylothorax ). Today, there are less than 500 cases in the world with such disease, which means very few doctors can manage it. The disease is affecting Monica’ skeleton, lungs and heart. The lymphatic system has an anomaly that results in diffuse fluid in the thoracic cage. Her condition was stable until February this year. Her left lung is covered in 75% of fluid which makes it hard for Monica to breathe and function overall. It also affects her heart rate (tachychardia). She was hospitalized in Moldova, and we thought that she was getting better, but unfortunately for unknown reason she developed internal bleeding very fast and suddenly. Sadly, doctors in Moldova could not help her because they never had patients with this disease. We connected with a doctor from Spain (Dr. Juan Carlos Lopez), who has several patients like Monica and he invited her to his hospital urgently. My family organized an emergency flight to get Monica to Madrid at the Quironsalud Hospital the same day that internal bleeding was identified, because it can be fatal any moment. She was so weak that she was at the point of not being able to walk or to do anything else. As of March 12th, Monica is being hospitalized in Madrid, and the costs of her stay and treatment/surgery are very high. She will be staying in intensive care unit for an undetermined amount of time, which makes it difficult for us to have a final cost. One day in intensive care unit is 3,360 euros. We also have to consider the cost of surgery and recovery time after that. We have been given an estimate of 60,000 euros for 2 weeks of her stay. However, Monica's condition requires undetermined time for recovery. This is her chance to survive. The costs are over our budget, and it has costed my family 32,000 euros only to get her to Spain in a very short time with an emergency flight.
