Since the July 2016 coup attempt, Turkey has seen mass arrests and trials on terrorism charges of hundreds of thousands of people who have not involved in any violent act. Those people, among them are journalists, teachers, academics, human rights defenders, and opposition politicians, have been accused and tried for who they are, rather than what they might have done. Human rights groups have established that these proceedings were political and unfair.
His parents are two of the 100,000 who have been imprisoned on false charges after 2016 in Turkey. His father was arbitrarily accused of terrorism just for being the head of a legally incorporated education company. Police raided their house on many occasions and interrogated Hakan about his parents when he was only 10 years old. These police raids and imprisonment of his parents made Hakan distressed. After all the things he went through Hakan was diagnosed with Leukaemia. He is being taken care of by his 70-year-old grandmother who is under threat due to COVID19 outbreak. Imagine a 10-year old kid’s life being upside down in political conflicts and imagine his parents’ grief and pain.
Hakan was receiving chemotherapy but it didn't go as it planned and his body went weaker. Doctors say his situation is critical and he will need a marrow transplant and the operation is planned to take place next month if his condition allows. Luckily his sister can be the donor. But doctors are not sure about the damage to organs. He will need special medications after the surgery. Organ transplantation might be needed. We all know one of the most important things for a cancer patient is to keep their morale boosted and he’ll not be happy until his family is rejoined. He needs his mum and dad to be with him.
There are things we can do for his parents to be free
1-) Find your MP and write to them about the situation and ask them to reach the relevant department to reach Turkish authorities.
2-) Write a letter to Ministry of Justice in Turkey and send it to [email redacted].tr
3-) You can also send the same letter to Turkish Parliament [email redacted].tr
Help him to see his parents again before it is too late.
What is £90k covering?
Turkish health system allows all cancer patients to have chemotherapy for free, also state-owned hospitals covering most of the costs of marrow transplant. But that's all he’ll receive. His medications are not covered as they’ll be very special and from foreign sources. We cannot be sure if the marrow transplant is going to work so he might need to go to a private hospital or abroad for his treatment.
According to our research the average cost needed for a cancer patient’s expenses in 3 years including medications and surgeries is £90k:
Surgery £50,000
Psychological support £1,500
Medications £22,000
Supportive treatments £10,000
Other costs (travel, equipment, etc.): £6,500
In Hakan’s situation we don't know what he’ll need and when, so we do not want to keep waiting for the costs to be gathered when an emergency situation happens. This is a huge risk for a cancer patient. If Hakan gets better, hopefully he will, we then donate the amount that we gather for him to another cancer patient(s) in need.
He has no mum, no dad with him he needs help!

Hakan Dağdeviren 11 yaşında ve geçtiğimiz ayarda lösemi teşhisi konuldu. 27 Ocak’ta Eskişehir Osmangazi Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi’nde tedavi altına alınan Hakan’a bu süreçte babaannesi Meral Dağdeviren refakat ediyor.
Öğretmen olan Hakanın anne ve babası Gülen Cemaatine üye oldukları suçlaması ile cezaevindeler. Suç işlediklerine dair herhangi bir kanıt olmamasına rağmen anne ve babası sırasıyla 6 ve 19 yıl hapis cezası aldılar. Anne Sabriye Dagdevirenin cezası yüksek mahkemede onanirken, babasınin cezası ise yüksek mahkemede hala devam etmekte.
Eskişehir'de nene ve dedesinin yanında kemoterapi gören Hakan'in ağzında ve vücudunda çok fazla yara oluştu. Bu yaralardan dolayı yemek yiyemiyor ve temel ihtiyaçlarını karşılamakta oldukça zorluk çekiyor.
Doktorlara göre Hakan’ın kurtulma şansı var ancak bunun için annesinin tedavi sırasında yanında olması gerekiyor. Aile hastalık teşhisinin konulduğu Ocak ayından bu yana en azından annesi Sabriye Dağdeviren’in tahliye edilmesi için başvurdu ancak bugüne kadar sonuç alamadı. Çok duygusal bir çocuk olan Hakan’ın sürekli annesini istiyor ve bu durumda babaanne ve dedenin çaresiz kalıyorlar.
70 yaşındaki babanesi tarafından bakılan Hakan’ın annesine ihtiyacı var. Kemoterapilerin etkisiyle çok zayıf düşen vücudu artık terapilere cevap vermiyor. Ablası ile iliği uyuşan Hakan yakında ilik nakli olmayı bekliyor ancak bu süreçte moralini yüksek tutmak çok önemli. İlik sonra Hakan'in vücudunun nasıl tepki vereceği hala bilinmiyor. Kanserin organlara verdiği zararın boyutu henüz teşhis edilemedi. Doktorlar, Ilik naklinin ardından ek nakillerin de gerekebilecegini belirtiyor. Hakan’ın ilik naklinden sonra yurtdışı menşeli özel ilaçlar kullanması gerekecek.
Hakan bu süreci tek başına geçirmek için çok küçük. Ailesinin bir arada olması ve Hakan’ın moralini yüksek tutması gerekiyor, hiçbir ilaç Hakan’ın annesine olan özlemi geçiremeyecek.
