Save Bear Creek Park

Hi, my name is Sebastian and I'm part of a group called "Friends of Bear Creek Park."

 

We've been engaged in a campaign to stop the extension of 84th Avenue through Bear Creek Park in Surrey, BC since February of this year. While we initially lobbied council and protested the road extension through our beloved park and important biodiversity corridor, we eventually had to mount a legal challenge .

 

Despite being successful in getting an interlocutory injunction against the road pending the hearing of our petition, the City of Surrey decided to drag us through an expensive appeal process that, ultimately, they lost. And they dragged us through that appeals process just over a week before the hearing of our main petition. If they won, it would have only meant they got started a week earlier (if we do not succeed with our main petition before the court).

 

This has ballooned our legal bills. While the community as well as the good folks at West Coast Environmental Law have helped us raise over $40,000 already, we find ourselves needing to continue to ask for help.

 

 

While this park is dear to the hearts of many in Surrey, our legal battle has implications beyond just this one road damaging this specific park. Already, our interlocutory injunction is a precedent setting part of case law allowing other citizens to mount similar challenges in the future. If our case is ultimately successful, it could also set a precedent around the use of park spaces across all municipalities.
