Sasamani Emergency Covid-19 Fundraiser

Tax deductible
Covid-19 spreads rapidly in Tanzania and can have a devastating impact on the vulnerable communities The Sasamani Foundation serves. We are on the ground to work collaboratively with the women and students in our education, employment and women leading change initiatives to address the evolving challenges. But we need help. Your support means direct support to families in crisis.

The Sasamani’s mission to break the cycle of poverty in Tanzania, is now a more urgent matter than ever. Experts have repeatedly warned about the perils in Tanzania, given its weak health infrastructure, poverty, poor sanitation, urban crowding and the expected shortage of supplies including basic foods. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the WHO, urged African countries to "prepare for the worst".

Our goal

We urgently seek to raise an initial US$10,000 to support the preparedness, prevention and response initiatives and address the most urgent needs of the Sasamani families and their communities caused by the coronavirus.

Sasamani’s emergency initiatives:

Here's is what we do:

Face masks: The Sasamani tailors sew face masks for all the 82 Sasamani families and the community, including the orphanages and the hospitals.

Distance learning: Together with our 3 partner schools for the Sasamani sponsorships we enable distance learning for the students, making sure they have the books they need, and receive weekly assignments.

Educational campaigns: Mis-information and myths about COVID-19 are a problem and create fear. We make sure reliable information from the WHO reaches the Sasamani families and the communities.

Soaps and basic, durable foods: Foods and soaps are more expensive and more scarce now. We provide the 82 Sasamani families and their communities with access to soap and basic, durable foods including rice, soybeans and cornflour.

Backyard vegetable garden kits: To prepare for food scarcity we developed a backyard gardening starter kit for the 82 Sasamani families to grow vegetables successfully. The kit contains Pumkin leaves and Amaranth seeds, instructions, pesticides, pesticide pump, fertiliser and mosquito nets.

Corona homes: Working together with the local doctors, we aim to prepare our office space in Bagamoyo, Tanzania to be used for health related issues such as testing and hospital overflow.

Hear from our Sasamani Staff:

Our Education Director, Gladness, shared,

“A student can only stay at home and practice social distancing when there is food at home. It is not easy for a family to afford three meals per day while being instructed to stay indoors, especially during this period of crisis. With your contributions, students and their families will not have to experience an empty stomach. And, in the event that they need to step out of their homes, at least we will be at ease knowing they will be able to wash their hands and face before entering their homes.”

Our Manufacturing Director, Elias, shared,

"Covid-19 is a very dangerous disease spreading fast and negatively affecting people's health and income on a global scale. In Bagamoyo, communities struggle daily to put food on the table while saving less or not at all. This includes our Sasamani sponsored students, tailors, and their families. When people do not have the ability to earn, this means hunger or even death as they can't purchase enough food and other basic needs for their families. Your donation means LIFE to this town in Tanzania."

The impact on the Sasamani community and greater Bagamoyo:

Our tailors, all seven of them, fall in the category of small shop owners who heavily rely on their customer base and overall business sales to support their family. With country-wide school closings, our sponsored students are staying home, without access to the meals once provided at school. Their parents and caretakers are unable to work which has made it nearly impossible for them to bring food home to their children. Bagamoyo is home to one of the most vulnerable communities in Tanzania and the community needs our help now more than ever.

As the lives of our Sasamani families and their community continue to feel the impact of COVID-19, The Sasamani Foundation worked with our staff on the ground in Tanzania to identify the highest and most urgent needs. This $10,000 USD will be spent on direct support for our Sasamani students, tailors, and their families. Our Sasamani community needs your help to survive this global health crisis. We appreciate your consideration, generosity, and willingness to serve others during this time of global need.
