In August of 2014, 23 year old Sarah Denger was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Suddenly thrown into a world of extreme illness and financial hardship, Sarah lost her job, along with her health insurance. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of many, Sarah was able to fight cancer without extreme financial hardship, finishing her chemotherapy in February 2015.
In September of 2015, a cancerous mass was again found in Sarah's lungs, which was identified during a lung biopsy as Hodgkin's. This will unfortunately require another intensive round of chemotherapy, during which she will have her own stem cells collected. After she has completed the chemotherapy, Sarah will be undergoing a stem cell transplant in order to maintain her red blood cell production.
Although the stem cell transplant will save her life, it will have many other detrimental health repurcussions, including infertility. After paying the high monthly premiums required of COBRA, Sarah still needs our support.
Perhaps Sarah is your friend. Or maybe she was a co-worker or your server at Malone’s where she worked while she was attending UK. Perhaps she was a schoolmate, neighbor, or even just an acquaintance. Perhaps you don’t even know her at all. All who know her, however, know her for her sweet, kind and gentle spirit, and her infectious smile—that beautiful, memorable smile—Sarah’s smile.
