School Solar Project in Ladakh

Help San Juan College undertake a photovoltaic (PV) installation at the remote SECMOL school in the spectacular Ladakh region of the northern India Himalaya.
SECMOL stands for Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, and was founded in 1988 by a group of young Ladakhis with the aim of reforming Ladakh’s failing educational system. Utilizing an incredibly successful self-directed learning model, students study topics ranging from English and science to traditional Ladakhi songs and dances.
The school is completely off-grid and embraces a 100% ecological model. SECMOL seamlessly weaves together organic farming and animal husbandry with sustainable technologies like solar cookers and solar heating. Their only electricity is solar generated, and they have outgrown their system. Lacking the resources and expertise to upgrade and fix issues with their current system, they greatly look forward to our help.
We will be living at the SECMOL campus doing the installation you will have incredible opportunities to interact with the high school aged students, helping them refine their English while sharing our cultures. The school is incredibly diverse, bringing together Tibetan Buddhists, Sunni and Shia Muslims, and Hindus.

SECMOL’s campus is located on the bank of the Indus River in the shadow of 20,000ft plus peaks. This northern edge of the Himalaya is the most arid region in all India, receiving less than 6” of rain a year, yet the melting glaciers feed pockets of incredible greenery and agriculture.
The SJC students are paying for their own travel to India in June 16-29, 2018 to help the SECMOL students. We are asking for donations to purchase the solar equipment: PV modules, batteries, charge controller, junction box, wire and other project materials. Thus, your donation will directly help these impoverished people.
We have a proven track record, and have completed three previous solar projects in Tibet and the Himalaya. In 2016 we outfitted a remote Tibetan Buddhist monastery with solar power in Ladakh 6 hours drive to the east of the SECMOL school. In 2014 and 2012 we did projects in eastern Tibet, outting a 700 year old Tibetan Buddhist Monastery perched on the side of a 25,000ft sacred peak and a remove village medical clinic. Additionally, project leader Chris Brooks has over a decade of experience organizing remote solar projects throughout the less industrialized world and has learned how to make sure they are sustainable by training the locals they benefit.
