Sandy Essinger-Hileman Memorial Fund

Sandy was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and daughter in addition to being a friend to many. She was loving, kind, and generous. She was a great listener and gave wise counsel. She led by example and was thoughtful about the causes that she supported. Fond memories from her children include how Sandy would sing them to sleep, bake goodies for their birthdays, share good book recommendations, and give the best hugs. Memories from others carry impressions of grace, kindness, patience, and genuine loving charm.

Sandy was always a light in her family’s life and her light was felt by all around her. Throughout her life, Sandy served others in many capacities. The majority of her adult life she served as a pastor, and she also worked in the service industry. Later in her life, she and Doug had dreams of merging the two but Sandy did not live to see those dreams become a reality. In everything she did, Sandy put serving other people above all.

With the unexpected loss of Sandy, the central goal of this memorial fund is to further the work that she was doing during her life. Funds raised will be used by the family in the following ways:

1. Donations to Important Causes: One of the main reasons for starting this memorial fund was to continue the work that Sandy was passionate about while she was alive. While she was passionate about many things, she was particularly passionate about her faith community, social economic injustice among food service workers, and those with food insecurity. (Donations: At least 20% of the funds raised, with a goal of $6000 to divide among the causes)
    -Birmingham Friends Meeting
    -Bread for the World
    -Broad Street Ministries
-As donations allow, contributions will be made to other causes that align with Sandy's work in life.

2. Memorial Garden: Sandy was an avid gardener, and that love was shared by her husband, Doug, and her children, Tom, Beth, and Laura. Many days as a young family were spent tending, harvesting, and enjoying the produce from the garden. Sandy and Doug were in the midst of building raised beds in their yard, and Doug would like to finish the garden in her memory. (Estimated completion cost: $2000)

3. Additional needs of the family: With the unexpected loss of Sandy, Doug will have the hard task of transitioning into life without her. He would like to stay in the house they shared together. At this moment, Doug's immediate financial future is uncertain, and any financial help is appreciated as he grieves and organizes his finances into a clearer picture.

Thank you for your love and support as we go through this difficult time. Sandy will be dearly missed - may her memory be eternal.
