My friend and business partner, Sandy Chapman, lost her valiant battle with cancer on September 21st, 2019. She was a woman of strength, determination, faith, passion, irreverence, and she had a killer sense of humor. We are so saddened by her loss – and want to create a living memory of Sandy in her shining example.
When she retired from Synova, we created the Rising Star Scholarship to honor her love for mentoring talented leaders and helping to develop career paths for them. She recognized talent in many and always encouraged others to take risks, be creative, and shine! And, she always had pithy responses … I remember a story about one of her leaders who needed help. This nurse leader was overwhelmed and had a lot on her plate – and she needed guidance in determining what could be 'taken off her plate'. When she finally mustered the courage to address it with Sandy, Sandy’s response was ‘get a bigger plate.’ Case closed! You may not have always appreciated her responses in the moment, but you ALWAYS knew that she 'had your back' and was preparing you to lead and succeed.
In order to memorialize her invaluable contributions to Synova and advancement of nurse leaders, we are funding the Rising Star Scholarship for nurse leaders interested in attending future NICU and Perinatal Leadership Forums. Sandy, Barbara, Cathy and I built this company together and Sandy would be pleased to know that more perinatal leaders will have opportunities for advanced education and a pathway to career success because of this scholarship opportunity in her name.
Friends and family have asked how they can show love and gratitude for Sandy - and we feel this is a fitting way to do it! Sandy consistently spread her bright flame into others. We miss you, Sandy, and are happy to see that your light will rekindle flames in the years to come.
