Hi, I'm Sam!
I'm from South Africa and recently turned 18. I am currently completing my A-levels and want to pursue teaching or law so that I can help those around me.
About a year ago I came out as transgender, after knowing my whole life I wasn't comfortable with the body I am living in. When telling my family, it became clear to me that if I wanted to continue my transition to be who I truly am, the relationships that I have with some of the most important people in my life would never be the same.
To be transgender in South Africa puts you in a very unsafe and dangerous situation, and only after moving to the UK was I able to fully embrace who I always felt I was. However, waking up every morning and having to find clothes that hide the parts of me I am dysphoric about feels hopeless.
Recently the UK government have made accessing hormone treatment nearly impossible and the waiting lists for the gender clinics are 4 years long. The only way possible for me to get testosterone treatment before university is to go privately. Unfortunately, gender-conforming treatment and surgery can be quite expensive and as I am a student, my little jar of coins is just not enough.
Testosterone is listed at £1000 and top surgery at £6000.
I would like to start testosterone before University so that I can feel comfortable with who I am and focus on my studies without having to worry if I pass every day.
I know that a lot of LGBTQIA+ members are in a similar position to me, and hopefully one day our situation will change, but until then every donation is appreciated.
