Hello Just a quick update. We have spent the last three days tearing out tile in the McDivitt home. Construction was halted while we did this. At first glance the tile seemed to be ok but as we started ripping it out we found moisture and some odor beneath the tile. This was all done by Monica and volunteers! Hopefully we are one step closer to rebuilding!
My name is Lorie Veldhuis. I live in Katy, Texas and I have been friends with the McDivitt family for about 10 years. Through these years I have seen them constantly give their time and efforts to causes that improve the lives of others. They are often the first if not the only people to step up when something is needed.
Monica is an RN who is currently staying at home with their daughter, Sam, who was born with a chromosome 18q deletion. As a result she has a cleft lip and palate, autism and severe cognitive and developmental delays. She is also deaf and nonverbal.
John McDivitt is a Nurse Practitioner with extensive experience in Emergency and Family Medicine.
When Hurricane Harvey hit Katy, Texas, its rain flooded the McDivitt home. Monica and John were forced to evacuate their home through a window. Sam and the family dog were placed on a surf board and Monica pushed them through waist high water to safety. John followed carrying as much of Sam's medical supplies and equipment as he was able to, leaving their home, personal belongings and two vehicles behind.
Currently, they are staying with friends and Sam will not let Hurricane Harvey beat her!
Sam's immediate medical needs and supplies are costly and, at this time, it is not determined when the McDivitt family will be able to return to or even see their home, let alone begin the lengthy rebuilding process.
Over the coming weeks and months, they will need money for rebuilding efforts, food, clothing, Sam's medical needs and everything they lost in the flood. They will need it to help rebuild their home and their lives.
Monica, John and Sam are the beneficiaries of this campaign because over the coming minutes, hours and days, they will need the money to survive.
