On Monday, October 26th, life took a drastic turn for Sam and his family.  He was involved in a three-car collision on HWY 47.  Sam's vehicle collided with a trailer being pulled by a jeep, which sent Sam's vehicle into a spin, consequently being struck on the right side by a truck.  Sam was rushed to the hospital in Washington and then transferred to Mercy in St. Louis where he underwent life-saving surgery.

Sam sustained many internal injuries, but the swelling in the brain was the most traumatic as it was what would determine if he made it through the night.  Yet, miracles do happen and family and friends sent many prayers for Sam and his family.  Sam eventually fought his way back to parents, Tom and Kathy, and sisters, Shelby and Abbey.

He woke for small periods of time and uttered his first words with great effort after many failures.  He smiled at his mom and asked for ice.  He fought to regain some semblance of himself and was determined to do it his way, regardless of what the doctors and nurses wanted him to do.  The true Sam was revealing himself in classic Sam fashion.

While he has returned to his home with his family at his side, life has changed for all of them.  Sam still has a long way to go with countless hours in therapy daily, and a final surgery to be determined.  The family has surrounded Sam with love and patience as they help him through this next journey in his life to ensure he continues to fight and regain more of himself.

In addition to the emotional toll it is taking to help Sam recover from the life-altering brain damage, including regain his speech, now the financial reality of all the care he has received and still needs is starting to sink in. As expensive as things are WITH the help of health insurance, Sam will be 26 in December and will no longer have health insurance through Tom and Kathy, thus increasing the out of pocket expenses to come.

The Zytkos have been there for many - always extending a helping hand when others were in need.  It is time for us to help them through this difficult time.  Please donate and help the Zytko family worry a little less about how they are going to manage it all.  Their focus needs to be on Sam and his recovery.
