Hello, I am Big Sam Rutherford’s wife, Karen. I would like to tell you a little about Sam and our family.
In our household there are three of us at the moment, Sam, me and our living-at-home, 19-year-old daughter, Samantha, who is in college locally. Children older and not living with us are 28-year-old son, Grant, and Sam has children from a previous marriage, Steven, 45, Kristi, also adult, and Brandon, in his 30s.
My husband Sam, has been diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer this week. He is 65-years-old. Yes, it has been a shocking week for our family. Six months ago in August, Sam had an abdominal and pelvic CT scan for an unrelated issue, which was resolved. At that time there was no sign of any disease in his abdomen or pelvis. This past week, he went in for a CT scan without contrast, to his abdomen and pelvis, looking for a possible kidney stone, and the following was found: Blastic lesions to his lumbar spine and pelvic structures, meaning it has penetrated the bone in those areas, along with enlarged lymph nodes throughout the lower abdomen and pelvic region and periaortic lymph node enlargement. His core biopsy a few days later revealed a definitive diagnosis of prostate origin.
Sam has not been able to work since about two weeks ago, due to lower back, pelvic and leg pain. He is very weak, and has lost 78 pounds now. We have seen our doctors, who have informed us that chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and possible radiation need to begin quickly, possibly next week. We are praying for miracles.
Unfortunately, I was laid off from my job on January 23, 2018 and have been unable to find employment, though searching. We do not have any health insurance, due to cost.
I have never been so desperate in my life for my sweet husband, Sam, of 21 years now, on March 20, 2018, to be back to his robust and strong self again.
Sam’s work family has been so kind to him for over 20 years now, and they are doing this Go Fund Me page for Sam. We love them and are grateful for their amazing support and love. We are hoping to receive a little assistance from you with chemotherapy, hormonal treatment, doctor visits or hospital stays possibly in the near future. Next week, he will have a whole body scan, abdominal lymph node biopsy and possibly another CT. Our doctor would like to start chemotherapy as soon as possible, since he is in stage IV of his cancer; so, next week is the beginning of that, I hope.
