When we heard UBC’s Open Water Research Station was shutting down we knew something had to be done to preserve this learning and research opportunity in Port Moody!
A diverse group of local environmentalists, business owners, and volunteers came together to form the Salish Sea Research and Education Society, and we’ve been working for the past year to re-launch this unique asset as a research and education station.
A year into the project, we are asking for YOUR help to grow a generation of exciting opportunities for university research, local K-12 students engagement, and public outreach through hands-on learning! We have raised over $20,000 with our floats to open in Fall 2020! This includes the initial steps of transforming a marine mammal sea pen into a floating classroom with engineering work, site surveys, insurance and permitting.
It's time to turn the physical structure into a lively community space and provide our children and youth with an on the water science experience including live touch tanks, watershed models and education regarding the impacts of development on our inlet!
This round of funding will help pay for:
- staff positions, to facilitate outreach events and teach student groups about our local ecosystem and watershed
- final renovations for the station including a touch tank, table and chairs, and a mural to beautify the facility
- procuring supplies like children’s life-jackets, binoculars, microscopes, dip nets, Secchi discs, a watershed model, and water quality testing supplies.
The Salish Sea Research and Education Society is extremely excited and motivated to bring this project to life and begin providing marine education to Port Moody and the Lower Mainland. We are extremely grateful for the support shown to us by the community, local environmentalists, the Pacific Wildlife Foundation and the City of Port Moody.
