Sakura Girls School Christmas Gift!

'High Quality Education for Better Future'

In 2016, Sakura Girls School opened in Tanzania,  aiming to improve girls education and promote women's independence and leadership. Four years later and the first graduation ceremony was held. I was lucky enough to be there and witness the proud moments and pure happiness of the students, teachers and parents!

During the students speech, they were unbelievably grateful to have received this education. Without this, many would have left education early and married in their teens, having children at a young age and forced into a vicious cycle of poverty.

The school relies on donations to fund the girls education and the safe, all girls dormitories on site. The late co-founder Sumiko Iwao was a Japanese Professor whose last dream was to improve women's education in Tanzania. Her son, Obumi Furuya, now helps raise funds from Japan. Frida Tomito, the other co-founder is an absolute angel! She is at the school everyday, making sure everything is the best it can be. It was her family's land where they built the school.

I talked to many of the 160 girls on my visit and they love the school, however they have suggested the following improvements:

Sports gear, clothes & shoes
To promote a healthy, active lifestyle, they wish to improve their sports capabilities. They know the importance of healthy living, but lack the tools they need.

TV installation
Currently the girls have no access to the internet or televisions. The aim of purchasing a TV would open their eyes to the outside world, keeping up with the latest news from Africa and around the globe.

New farmland
The school grows some vegetables for the students, to ensure they are getting a healthy, balanced diet. They would like to extend their sustainable farmland by 3.5 acres, enabling them to produce more fresh and local produce. Money raised would go towards this large cost.

I left the school feeling humbled by the great work people have done to push for better women's education. I grew up in the UK, where education was the norm. I feel lucky to have had that experience and would like to do my bit by giving these girls the best chance in life.

I talked to Sophie and this was a no-brainer, let's do our bit to help the school!
