On January 19, City of Winston-Salem officials informed Fairytale Farm Animal Sanctuary that they cannot continue operating inside city limits. Farms are allowed, but a nonprofit farm is not because it is considered by the city to be a commercial business. FFAS is a 501c3 nonprofit rescue, fully volunteer run with all funds raised going to animal care, feed and vetting. It was founded by my friend Kimberly and her family in May of 2021. They are amazing and selfless people who together with the community have rescued and rehabilitated over 70 farm animals - all with special needs, injuries, neglect or trauma. Now all sources of funding have been shut down by the city.

The nonprofit is currently run from the family’s personal home with volunteers from the community, and all funds go directly to the care of the animals. The residents who are at risk of losing their home include goats, donkeys, ducks, rabbits, pigs, sheep, and turkeys. Fairytale Farm also provides educational opportunities to learn about rescue work through homeschool days, summer camps, fundraising events and volunteer opportunities for children and adults.

The City of Winston-Salem received an anonymous complaint and began investigating the rescue in January. Zoning officers stated they consider the nonprofit a business and therefore it cannot continue to operate on the current property. Once the city issues a formal letter, Fairytale Farm Animal Sanctuary will have 5 days to comply.

Fairytale Farm Animal Sanctuary cannot continue to save and care for these precious animals without our help. It will take a large community of us to make this happen!
