My name is Chris Burnett (50 years old) and I live in Dallas NC with my thirteen year old daughter, Dakota. I have been struggling recently with work, having lost a job in 2014 due to a back injury and only managing to find work week by week or day by day with the help of a friend since then. I have also suffered from Crohn's Disease since 1995 and oftentimes cannot work as much as I would like because of it. I have applied for disability twice and been denied both times.
This winter has been particularly difficult for us. There has not been much work available for me and I have had to turn to my elderly mother for financial help. She recently bought me a new washing machine for my house since mine quit working and I am on a plan to repay her for that. She has been more than helpful, but she is on a fixed limited income and can only help so much. I cannot afford the propane required to heat my house and have been using two space heaters instead, which drives up my electric bill.
I have lost my Medicaid coverage due to claiming self-employement status. I qualify for VA healthcare as a Marine Corps veteran, but have not used that for years and am in the process of returning to them for my Crohn's treatment. As a result of losing Medicaid, I have not had any treatment for my Crohn's since August 2016. Dealing daily with the symptoms of that disease has been a struggle as well.
My daughter has two school trips this year: a band trip to Disney World in January and a class trip to Washington DC in March. Each of those costs over $400. We are able to send her on both, but just barely.
Dakota and I would greatly appreciate any help that you can give to us!
