Let the future of Lion Heart Medical Centre shine!

Lion Heart Medical Centre (LHMC) is een non-profit ziekenhuis, ruraal gelegen in het hart van Sierra Leone. In de wijde omgeving zijn geen andere ziekenhuizen te vinden, waardoor ruim 150.000 inwoners van LHMC afhankelijk zijn voor levensreddende zorg. Maandelijks zien we 800 tot 1200 patiënten, voeren we 60-70 operaties uit en komen er 30 tot 50 vrouwen bevallen. Voor al deze voorzieningen is uiteraard stroom nodig. Op dit moment is LHMC met name ‘s nachts en in het regenseizoen afhankelijk van een dieselgenerator, die duur, vervuilend én onbetrouwbaar is. De wereldwijde brandstofcrisis heeft grote gevolgen in Sierra Leone. In het afgelopen jaar zijn de brandstofprijzen verdubbeld en regelmatig is er geen diesel verkrijgbaar. Dit brengt enorme risico’s met zich mee voor onze patiënten.

Daarom willen we zo snel mogelijk het bestaande zonne-energiesysteem uitbreiden om het ziekenhuis volledig groen en zelfvoorzienend te maken. Elke €50,- betekent één zonnecel!

Voor €600,- kunnen we een heel zonnepaneel kopen

Om onze medische apparatuur te laten draaien hebben we veel zonnepanelen nodig. Zo zijn er al drie panelen nodig om een patiënt 24 uur lang te ondersteunen met zuurstof. Op woensdagmiddag echoën we zwangere vrouwen, dat verbruikt de stroom van ongeveer 5 panelen. En een drukke dag op de operatiekamer maar liefst 8 zonnepanelen.

Let the future of Lion Heart Medical Centre shine!



Lion Heart Medical Centre (LHMC) is a general hospital, located in the rural heart of Sierra Leone. The hospital has been built up from a small health centre in 2010 to the fully equipped second line facility it is nowadays. LHMC is presently the first referral option for 20 surrounding health centres covering a population of over 150.000 inhabitants. Every month we see 800 to 1200 patients, perform 60-70 surgeries, and 30 to 50 deliveries. Of course, all these facilities require electricity. The hospital currently relies on a diesel generator (especially at night and in the rainy season), which is expensive, polluting and unreliable. The worldwide fuel crisis has had major consequences in Sierra Leone. Fuel prices have doubled in the past year and diesel is regularly unavailable. This entails enormous risks for our patients.

That is why we want to expand our existing solar energy system as soon as possible to make the hospital completely green and self-sufficient. That way we can secure our patient care and our future! To run our medical equipment we need many solar panels. For example, there are three panels needed to support a patient for 24 hrs with oxygen. On Wednesday afternoons we scan pregnant women, this consumes the energy of about 5 panels. And a busy day in the operating theatre as much as 8 panels.
