Hola All you lovely peeps

For those do not know me I am Ali and I am a final year nursing student at Bournemouth University. As part of our training we undertake placements in a variety of different clinical settings which enhances our training and development. However I wish to broaden my experiences and enhance my skills, which I feel will develop me more personally, professionally and clinically.
To those that know me , they know I always love a challenge!! The challenges is .... I have opted to volunteer to work overseas with an organisation called ‘Work the World’ who facilitate medical professionals wanting to practise overseas.
I have chosen Nepal as my elective placement. Healthcare in Nepal somewhat differs from the healthcare in the UK. Health care facilities, hygiene, nutrition, and sanitation in Nepal are of poor quality, particularly in the rural areas. According to WHO 2012 the average life expectancy in Nepal is 68. In Nepal, disease is significantly higher than in any other South Asian country, especially in the rural areas. Millions of people are at risk of infection and thousands are dying each year due to malnutrition, infectious diseases and other health related events.
As I mentioned before , those who know me , know I love a challenge and I feel this overseas placement will provide that challenge. It will push me and develop me as a person, and as a nurse and I believe it will provide me with valuable experiences and skills that I can use in the UK as my role as a nurse. I will be dealing with many different illnesses and diseases whilst working in a totally different health care setting with very limited resources.
I fly to Kathmandu, then on to Pokhara in May, where I will be working in the Emergency Department in Manipal Hospital. It is one of the busiest in the country and provides care to many of Nepal’s poor. I am also spending time on a maternity ward where I will get to experience Nepal’s maternal health care, which differs greatly from the UK. After my time in the hospital I will be trekking into the Himalia’s for a week where I will be running a health clinic in a village called Kalika. I will be providing health clinics to the people in the village. During my time there I will live with a host family, who are self-sufficient and I will be experiencing their culture. I will be helping with the daily tasks of living, such as looking after the animals and cooking. I will be keeping a diary of my experiences, as well as an online blog so you can all follow me on my adventure and also so my biggest fans (my 3 boys) can see what their mummy is up too!!! I will be giving a presentation upon my return.
This is a voluntary elective placement which will cost me over £3000, this includes, flights, visas, vaccinations, accommodation and food. This is all self-funded and I need your support. This figure includes the cost for medical supplies such as gloves, scrubs, aprons etc.

I am holding a quiz night in The Bear Inn, Wincanton on the 28th April 2018, which will have fantastic prizes from local businesses up for grabs and it will also be an opportunity to have a  few leaving drinks to see me on my way! I will also have an Easter cake made by my very close friend Clare Brummit up for grabs to have on Easter sunday after your dinner!  I am also taking part in Tough Mudder, but this is not until August.
