Sherry's Breast Cancer Journey

On Nov. 6, 2020, our friend Sherry Palmer had a mammogram at the baptist mobile unit in Vicksburg. She was called back Nov. 16th for another mammogram & ultra sound for calcifications that had shown up on the original mammogram. On Nov. 27th she had a COVID test for pre-biopsy & on the 30th a stereotactic biopsy which was ordered by her surgeon Dr. Maples at the Baptist and performed by the radiologist at The Baptist Breast Center. On Dec. 3rd she was told by Dr. Maples the dreaded news that no one wants to hear... she had cancer in her right breast. On Dec. 7th she was told what kind of cancer it was... invasive lobular carcinoma. At this point, Dr. Maples recommended a lumpectomy & radiation. He referred her to her Oncologist, Dr. Natalee Sheehan. Dr. Sheehan recommended a double mastectomy and reconstruction, stating that she didn’t want Sherry to become a pin cushion and always live with the fear of reoccurrence because of dense cystic “busy” breast. An MRI & PET Scan was ordered on Dec. 21st to check the other breast for a suspicious spot and to make sure the cancer hadn’t spread anywhere else. All scans came back clear. Thank the Lord!! Through multiple appointments with multiple doctors & lots of prayers, it was finally decided that Sherry would have a double mastectomy performed by Dr. Maples & reconstruction by Dr. Bass. So on Feb. 23, 2021, she had surgery at Baptist Hospital in Jackson to remove all breast tissue & the first of her reconstruction surgeries. Surgery went well & the lymph nodes came back free & clear of cancer!! Another blessing!! She’s still recuperating but doing great. She’ll have a minor reconstruction surgery in about 3 months. 


Sherry is owner & sole operator of a cleaning business. Over the last couple of months she’s had to miss work periodically due to doctors appointments & of course, she hasn’t been able to work at all since surgery. We’re not sure when she will be able to return to work at this point either. Her bills still need to be paid but with no income coming in that’s hard to do. She’s saved over the years but that’s dwindled with the multiple tests & procedures. Chris & I are setting up this GoFundMe to help her with her finances.
