I am starting this site to support my father Jim Smith. On November 13th my dad was taken to
Cape Cod Hospital with unexplained symptoms of confusion, in ability to communicate, and weakness. After a full day of tests, an MRI showed a large brain tumor. It was a complete shock. Just weeks before he had been at my home in Portland helping me build a deck!
It was determined by the neurologist that the tumor needed to be removed immediately. My dad underwent a 6 hour craniotomy to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Unfortunately, tests revealed that the tumor was malignant and this type of Central Nervous System Lymphoma requires intensive chemotherapy. He is receiving treatment at Dana Farber in Boston. His treatment is further complicated by the fact that he takes blood thinners so each round of chemotherapy requires 5 or more days of hospitalization. When he comes home from treatments, he is weak and requires constant care. However, because he is not bedridden, we are unable to get in home supports covered.
My dad is in great spirits, continuing to be his feisty sarcastic self. Moreover, our friends and family have been great, providing meals, transportation to Boston, and helping watch my dad so my mom can continue to work part-time. Unfortunately, the rising medical and prescription drug bills, high care needs, and travel costs is rapidly draining our family’s resources. The financial burden is exacerbating what is already a very stressful situation for my parents.
I’m reaching out to ask for your help. Please consider a donation of any size to help my dad cover his current and future medical costs. I was also hoping to use funds to hire some in home support to help relieve some of the care burden from my mother.
No matter what we are going to keep fighting because my dad has so much more life left to live!
