On Friday January 5th, 2018, our Ryan suffered an injury to his right arm that lead to the development of Compartment Syndrome. In order to save his arm, a procedure was performed to relieve the pressure from within the muscle compartments of the arm. However, the damage was severe and the muscle death in his arm released dangerously high levels of toxins into his bloodstream. Unfortunately, Ryan's kidneys could not handle the load and shut down completely. He was put on total life support as he could no longer breathe without assistance. He was not expected to recover. But a miracle happened Saturday afternoon as he regained partial consciousness and the ability to partially breathe without assistance!
We are so grateful and blessed that he has crossed this hurdle, but his condition remains critical with a very long and arduous road ahead to recovery. Because his condition is so dire, Ryan was medevaced to the University of Utah Hospital late last night where he currently remains in critical condition. He is on full continuous kidney dialysis in the Intensive Care Unit. While he can breathe on his own, he is not stable enough to remove the ventilator and unfortunately a chest tube has been inserted due to a punctured lung he received during emergency treatment. He has had 2 surgical procedures already to relieve the pressure in his arm, and he will be going in for more tomorrow. We expect these to be the first of many surgeries to come. Of most concern at this stage is his kidney function, as we do not yet know whether the damage sustained is permanent.***
As you can imagine the cost of ongoing kidney dialysis, full-time care in the Intensive Care Unit, the two ambulance trips that were taken, and the surgical procedures performed is an insurrmountable financial burden for anyone let alone for a young family of six. The details of what kind of care will be needed moving forward are still fuzzy as we are still in crisis mode with his recovery, but we do anticipate that further surgical procedures will be performed. We anticipate that he will be in the ICU and then in the hospital for quite a long while. Further down the road, physical as well as occupational therapy are on the table as he continues the road to recovery.
Ryan's recovery is expected to be long and as such he will be unable to work and support his family for quite some time. Supporting Ryan and his family with whatever you can give to help relieve the financial burden would be greatly appreciated. With financial assistance, Ryan and his family can focus on getting healthy and strong again.
