Running for Ruth

On August 12th myself and my friend Dee are attempting to take on a half marathon (emphasis on the attempting part!). While Dee has conquered a half before, it's my first time! It's not something that I ever really had ambitions to do, (I've always been a 10km max runner!) but I have a very good reason for pushing myself further. We're raising money to help fund my cousin, Ruth Carroll's (pictured above with me) recovery.
Ruth married her husband David in June 2016 and they were blessed that she became pregnant shortly after. Their excitement and joy of impending parenthood was short lived, when Ruth developed complications related to the pregnancy that resulted in a tumour behind her eye. This required urgent treatment that couldn't be administered until their baby had been delivered.
Thankfully Bobby arrived safely into the world on 31st of March last year. Again, their euphoria was short lived when Ruth suffered a number of strokes following the birth which left her paralysed on the left hand side of her body. A lengthy period of rehabilitation and an intensive program of aggressive physio followed with greater and lesser rates of success.
After a lengthy hospital stay Ruth spent a number of months in the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire learning to walk again. She is now at home with her husband and son but her journey is far from over.
The next stage of treatment requires Ruth to travel to Manchester Neuro Therapy Centre on an ongoing basis to receive specialist care with the hope of full function returning to her left side. This comes at a significant cost and so we're all trying to help Ruth and Dave as much as we can by fund-raising to support this.
