So, we aren’t natural athletes and running doesn't come easy to us, but a recent event has made us start.
We’re running the Great North Run to help save the life of the thousands of children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
As well as helping others, We are are hoping to help fund research in to finding a cure or standard of care for a little boy close to our hearts. Just over 2 years ago, good friends of ours - Geoff and Vicki Snaith had the awful news that their youngest son Theo had been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a diagnosis which they are still struggling to come to terms with. Being given the news your son has an incurable disease with a life expectancy of mid to late twenties is something none of us should have to deal with.
Although at this moment in time there is no cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystophy there has been many advancements in research which gives hope of finding a cure or at least standard of care/treatments which can delay the onset of Duchenne until a cure can be found for this horrible disease.
Our second goal is to raise as much money as we can for Geoff and Vicki to help with Theo's current needs and hopefully help support them with the financial impact that comes with this condition.
What is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy or DMD as is commonly known?
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare genetic muscle wasting condition affecting around 2,500 people in the UK – the vast majority being male. The body does not produce a protein called dystrophin which is needed for muscle function.
Usually diagnosed around the age of 4 years, parents are told the devastating news that the life expectancy of their child is around 30 years – the worst news you could ever expect to hear. DMD severely affects quality of life; in time, a wheelchair is used full-time and eventually all of the muscles in the body stop working. Ventilation is needed to assist with breathing and death usually occurs from heart failure.
