Run for WIC & BJCA Mentorship programme

Women are a minority in Cardiology in the United Kingdom but also all over the world.

Around 30% of cardiology trainees are female. However, 50% of medical students are female and 50% of junior doctors are female. Why are female doctors not applying to Cardiology?

The British Junior Cardiologists' Association has created a "Women in Cardiology (WIC)" Representative who highlights issues related to female cardiology trainees and works on solutions to ultimately increase the numbers of junior doctors applying for training in Cardiology.

I have taken over this role recently. I launched a social media campaign to raise awareness of the lack of mentorship for cardiology trainees in particularly needed for female trainees.
12 mentors both male and female have volunteered to support me and a third of female cardiology trainees in the UK who have signed up to the programme.

The aim of this mentorship programme is not only to promote diversity but also to aid talent and career development. The ultimate goal is to improve professional and personal wellbeing of female trainees which has proven to increase quality of patient's care.

Different levels and experience of Cardiologists are involved and everyone (including the mentor) needs to understand their role. The money will provide training sessions which help mentors and mentees to understand their role in the program and what to expect. Training includes racial, cultural, gender awareness, and communication. By understanding these cultural and gender-based assumptions all participants will develop a mentoring partnership based on trust and authenticity.

In AUGUST I will run 200 km (124 miles) to raise money to provide all mentors & mentees signed up to the PILOT PHASE a virtual training programme for "Successful mentoring" facilitated by @AlexisHutson1.

If you can't support this project financially please support me by running with me. Just download the free "runtastic app", add me to your leaderboard (Sarah Birkhoelzer) and chase me to the finish line.

Of course I am not just running 200 km. I will be pushing a double pushchair with my 6 months old son & my 3 years old daughter including various monkeys, cats and rabbits. This whole spectacle will be escorted by my furry friends.

Please donate your coffee/ take away money to change the future of Women in Cardiology.

Let's not STAND for WIC, let's RUN for WIC and improve wellbeing in Cardiology and the quality of care we deliver to patients with cardiovascular disease.
