Run for Freedom 2020

Run for Freedom 2020 is a fundraiser for Survivors LEAD (Learn, Engage, Advocate, Develop), a flagship leadership development program for survivors of slavery and human trafficking.

Run for Freedom is hosted in conjunction with the Robin Hood Half Marathon in Nottingham, UK on 26 & 27 September.

Developed by Survivor Alliance,  Survivors LEAD trains survivors to be community leaders among their fellow survivors. Survivor Alliance promotes a collective, co-production model of leadership, which values everyone's unique skills and talents. Leadership does not have to be flashy or individualistic.

Our leadership program involves:
- Learning about survivors' rights and the social systems of care
- Outreaching to people and getting to know one's local survivor community
- Developing relationships with charities, local authorities, and business leaders
- Building a strong network of survivors that provide valuable peer support
- Engaging in online, self-directed learning with Survivor Alliance's unique and novel leadership training curriculum
- Learning by doing: participating in workshops and events by other anti-slavery organisations
- Self-reflection and self-care

Like most organizations, our programs became 100% onine since the lockdown from COVID 19. But not everyone has access to a computer, regular internet, or enough mobile phone data to join our programs. And, community building can't just happen online. As the lockdown eases, we are working to find ways to adapt our program. Please join us in this work!

Run for Freedom is about access. Survivors need more than freedom from slavery. We need and want the freedom to live our lives fully and to grow and human beings. This means access to the resources and support that will enable  full freedom. Survivors LEAD provides this access.

Run for Freedom is about wellbeing. Survivors cope with heightened levels of traumatic stress, complex relationships with our bodies, and for some people, physical disabilities and injuries. Also, many survivors are used to being trapped in rooms or places without the freedom to move about. Running (and or walking) as a community allows us to remember - we are alive, we have allies, and we can reclaim our health and wellbeing.

Who is Survivor Alliance?
Survivor Alliance UK CIC is a not-for-profit organisation that unites and empowers survivors of slavery and human trafficking and partners closely with Survivor Alliance USA. We were founded by survivors, and have a team of both survivors and our allies. We engage with over 50 survivors across the UK and  an additional 150+ survivors around the world.

Survivors of slavery and human trafficking are people who are able to exit the exploitation and live among us in society. Survivors are our neighbors and classmates, friends and colleagues. Unfortunately, very little attention is given to survivors beyond the immediate crisis needs, but survivors want to pursue a full and happy life like all of us. Very few organisations are led by and for survivors and we are committed to ensuring the lived-experience of survivors remains central to our work.
