The reason why I'm reaching out for help is because Rue-B is in crisis. We have had a 20 year history in the East Village Community, also known as Alphabet City, here in the Lower East Side of New York. It is by virtue of those 20 years considered an institution. Recently targeted in a series of break-in's on the Lower East Side, we were, along with many other businesses, the recipient of damages.
We are a small venue, and in this economy it has become more difficult for us to survive in. I have been using my modest celebrity status to raise the consciousness in the community and to support live music and live jazz. For me, this has been a labor of love. With that being said, the expense of keeping a business like this open is riveting, and to exacerbate it, due to Covid-19 and the city's closures, has heightened challenges.
First and foremost my employees will benefit and as an equal opportunity employer, I am here to serve my community with equanimity. Secondly, the community benefits because Rue B is definitively a house of spirits, not just the spirits to imbibe but the history of music and jazz in the East Village. The funds will be used to upgrade Rue B so that when we do re-open the business will have a fresh beginning, and a new look with the hope of music staying alive in the LES.
We need the funds as soon as possible in time for the official reopening of business after the Covid-19 bans are lifted. This crisis has economically devestated Rue B and the chances of us recovering and or staying open without this campaign are slim. In addition to the outstanding bills that need to be paid, and the losses taken, we will be using the raised funds to upgrade and publicize the fact, that Rue B is alive and open for business. The funds will also be used to pay all vendors necessary in order to remain operational.
Originally opened in 1999, by my dear friend and mentor Peter DuPre, Peter passed the torch to me in 2014 to keep Rue-B's legend alive for another 20 years. He entrusted me to carry the legacy because of my history in the music business and as a protege of David Bowie. As an actor, writer, and former recording artist, I am committed to maintaining the spirit of live jazz and music to the community at large.
