Ruby vs. Cervical Cancer

My big sister, Ruby Pickett Torralva, has always been the type of person to take care of others before herself. This is evident in the way she cares for her sweet son, Anthony. She's always been strong and in control. However, on August 1, 2017, control was taken from her when her oncologist confirmed she has cervical cancer.

Over the past month, I've come to realize that the fear and anxiety associated with knowing you have a form of cancer is unimaginable. When you add the financial burden, especially for a single mom who's already on a tight budget, the stress can be crippling.

My wish for Ruby is to take the financial stress away, so she can focus solely on her physical fight. Ruby's treatment plan includes 6-8 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation, followed by two hospital stays to deliver high-dose internal radiation.

While our dad has generously contributed, there are ongoing expenses and out-of-pocket maximums to contend with. The treatment plan also includes more tests, scans and imaging that will roll over into next year. This means there will be new deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums.

I've set a goal that we believe will help cover a large portion of the medical expenses through the remainder of her treatment. While it's difficult to reach out and ask for help, it is more painful to see the stress that the financial burden causes.
