Supporting arts and culture in San Diego!
Covid-19 has had a huge impact on the arts and culture in San Diego. With everyone isolated and working from home, public engagement with the arts has significantly decreased. Lockdown has left many museums and galleries closed, meaning that artists and small arts organizations get no exposure. And for art lovers, whether intrepid travelers or local supporters, it’s harder than ever to find the best spots away from the well-worn main strip.
This app is for the real fans. The die-hards who want to grab a camera and get out onto the street corners to get great art pics. Or the supermoms who want to take their kids for an artsy outing.
We’ve worked closely with the City of San Diego and designed a digital platform to help artists and art galleries get more exposure and engage people in the city by mapping walking routes of public art (all totally covid friendly!). The app features current and upcoming exhibits, up-and-coming artists, public artwork, and our curated selection of local museums and galleries.
What’s the money for?
We’ve already designed and tested the basic app. Now we are raising money to help develop the web and mobile app that will be released to the public.

About us
We are art enthusiasts with a background in data science and design. We believe the arts help spread tolerance, understand different perspectives, increase knowledge, and create a sense of community. We began this project as a fun weekend sprint, but after talking to artists and non-profit organizations hit hard by covid-19, we saw a bigger need to help young artists and smaller arts organizations get in front of an audience. The more research we did, the more we realized there isn’t a single platform dedicated to discovering arts in the city.
About the project
The City Canvas app and website will provide personalized ways to discover and experience arts and culture in San Diego's neighborhoods at a glance. It will showcase artworks, exhibits and walkable art-based tours in the city and help to archive the wealth of art and cultural assets in San Diego. The project was the winner of the SCALE San Diego Urban Innovation Challenge 2020 and was featured at the inaugural San Diego Design Week 2020.
