WHAT IS ROOTED?
Rooted, is a social horror about identity crisis in the wake of the growing popularity of genealogy testing. In the same sense of films like, Get Out, or Us, we wanted to examine the psychological ramifications of self-discovery at the hands of life-shifting information told from an African-American perspective.

What if in an instant you found out that everything you knew about yourself, culture, language, and history was wrong? Rooted, is about Kay, a 28-year-old musician who receives his genealogy results along with a mysterious mask that allows him to see into the slave dungeons of his African ancestors. The power grants Kay the opportunity to witness his roots literally, but things begin to go awry when Kay realizes that his ancestors can see him as well.

Not only do the ancestors see Kay, but they also see a way out and will stop at nothing to gain their freedom...

THE BIGGER PICTURE.
Rooted stems from a feature screenplay, The Homesick. The project was part of both the Blackhouse Producers Lab 2020  and Sundance Producers intensive 2021  as seen here in Deadline  under one of our producers, Ashley Chrisman. We hope the short will help launch the feature project by showcasing the creative team's ability to craft an original social horror, unlike anything seen before.

With the help of Panavision's New Filmmaker Program, we were able to make an incredible film amidst the pandemic. Now, all we need are funds for our highly anticipated festival run and screening premier. That's where you come in...

THE FUNDS.
Since the film is almost done we're looking for just a little push to bring this project out into the world. Unlike other campaigns whose goal is to amass a large amount to fund the project from start to finish, we've already done the heavy lifting. That's why our goal is $2500. We want to be able to get this great film in front of our friends, families, supporters, and wonderful audiences.

Our post-budget is broken into a few categories:

1. Festivals: $1000

2. Screening/Marketing: $1500

We'll give you a shoutout on social media when you donate! We'll also show you the exact festival we'll be using your donation to apply to. We'll also put you on our notify list to let you know the results. We made an awesome film that's already landed several meetings with studios and has been a finalist for Decentralized Pictures, Vanishing Angle Fund, and Screencraft Film Fund. We're super confident we'll place into a lot of these prestigious festivals.

FINAL THOUGHTS. 
As you all know, it takes a lot to bring an elevated horror film to life. Most of our cast and crew joined the team because they believe in the project. Rooted is a labor love filmed during one of the most difficult times in our modern history against strict and expensive safety measures. Most independent films couldn't get made. Regardless of the adversity, we created an entertaining, relevant, and beautiful film that exceed our expectations. We can't wait to get it out to festivals so the world can see it.
