Who is Room to Read?
Room to Read is a global organization transforming the lives of millions of children in low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. They work in collaboration with local communities to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and to ensure that girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions. Room to Read has impacted 18.7 million children across more than 37,000 communities in 16 countries.
After more than a decade of work transforming the lives of students and their communities, Room to Read began to offer technical assistance and to share our expertise and resources with partner organizations. We provide training materials, workshops, and monitoring, to these partners in an effort to maximize the quality of their work and, in turn, to expand the benefit to children on an even larger scale through these partners.
With your support, Room to Read can effectively build the capacity of local organizations in Vietnam, both enhancing their work and shining a light on the importance of educating and supporting girls across the country.
Room to Read has identified two exceptional grassroots organizations in Vietnam to help carry out elements of its innovative girls’ education model, including Capacity Building Support and Center for Women and Children (CSWC).
What is Capacity Building Support and Center for Women and Children (CSWC)?
CSWC is a grassroots organization with a mission to empower vulnerable migrant girls. CSWC works on capacity building for women and children through life skills, sexual education, reproductive health, violence against women, child abuse issues and career preparation.
CSWC has provided services such as training and workshops to tens of thousands of underprivileged children, victims of sexual violence and abuse, children with HIV-AIDs and those at risk of juvenile delinquency in Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces in Vietnam.
Room to Read and CSWC in Partnership
Room to Read will provide technical support to enhance CSWC's life skills training approach and mentoring methods. Room to Read will review CSWC’s existing materials on children’s rights, sexual harassment and violence prevention, and will collaborate with CSWC to supplement their program design and delivery by providing training to all CSWC’s trainers.
The 12-month pilot project’s overall goal is to protect and promote the rights of vulnerable girls in shelters and informal education establishments in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), specifically District 8 and Binh Chanh District, through education and social service support. The project focuses on the following:
· Providing 150 vulnerable girls with essential life skills education and material support, which will help girls to access and pursue schooling in informal education establishments. Life skills classes will focus on the rights of children and young girls and the prevention of sexual harassment and abuse.
· Educating and enhancing the capacity of parents and caregivers through workshops that provide educational and social support to girls. The workshop will help to enhance their knowledge, change their attitudes, and enable them to provide more effective support to their children.
· Building the capacity of relevant stakeholders to protect and promote the rights of girls. CSWC staff will conduct regular monitoring support to the participating child protection centers and shelters, evaluate implementation, and document the lessons learned through the pilot.
Project Budget
· $7,250: Providing education and material support for 150 vulnerable children. This includes student books, school supplies and life skills classes focused on girls' rights and sexual harassment prevention.
· $2,700: Parent and caregiver education, including a parents' workshop on girls' rights to help change attitudes towards girls, training sessions for caregivers and CSWC field staff on topics of girl child rights and harassment prevention.
· $1,800: Material development and capacity building for CSWC. This involves reviewing and revising existing materials on girls' rights, sexual harassment and gender-based violence, as well as providing training for trainers.
· $3,000: Partnerships and project stakeholder engagement including workshops, quarterly meetings and a year-end review with all stakeholders.
· $5,400: Ongoing monitoring and support of the project
· $1,800: CSWC management fees
· $2,680: Room to Read staff costs including project management, workshop development and participation, meeting time, review of materials, transportation, etc.
· Total budget: $24,630
