Help Keep Roll Play Rolling!

Dear friends, family and supporters,
This is an appeal to our community to lend us a helping hand in this time of adversity and help us pull through these difficult times together. We started Roll Play in 2019 to diversify the entertainment and dining options on State Street, Madison. We are a minority owned and women-led board game cafe, with a street food inspired menu, baked goods and a collection of 200+ tabletop games of different genres. As UW-Madison alumnus, we wanted to provide both students and the local community a destination of fun, inclusivity and international deliciousness. We aim to create a unique experience for our customers, providing them with a rotating international street food menu and expertise of game masters.
As a new business, we were on an upwards trend prior to Covid-19. We progressively expanded our customer base and started hosting community events such as Dungeons & Dragons Nights and student associations’ meetups. In the short seven months that we were in regular operations, we became the welcoming place for many friendly conversations, birthday celebrations, meetings, first dates, hangouts and family gatherings. Things were looking bright for both owners and staff members of Roll Play by the end of February 2020. However, in March 2020 when the Covid-19 situation worsened and the Safer at Home order took effect, we had to close our doors for board games and dine-in temporarily.
We immediately felt the impact of the pandemic, financially, mentally and physically. We pivoted from our original business model to include deliveries, family meals, curbside and board game rentals. Despite our response, sales have decreased by 70% and we are struggling to support our staff members and vendors. We are extremely grateful to have vendors who are patient with payments as well as staff members who offered to take a pay cut and help wherever they could. The Paycheck Protection Program has helped us cover some of our employees’ salaries in April and May, but with limited capacity, our current sales are insufficient to cover our ongoing operational costs. We have also had to cover the costs of fixing several structural issues that have cropped up due to the age of the building.
We at Roll Play would deeply appreciate any assistance to help keep Roll Play rolling, whether it may be a small donation or a social media share. We hope to be able to continue serving our local Madison community by contributing towards the diversity of the entertainment and culinary culture of our beloved city.
