Robert Mailly, pictured above, is a man with above most else, an upbeat attitude that I have never seen diminished; this, despite a life story that has nearly taken his life with every surgery necessary ( 20 total in 10 years) to contain a hospital born MRSA spine infection that most recent went into the bones of his face, entire spine and both feet. A major mistake by Medicare and need for weekly spine infection treatment he has exhausted all funds and is in dire need of weekly nerve blocks and other services. As Rob's older brother, I have witnessed his unwavering optimism for many years. There is 10 years of graphic surgery detail being left out, the worst being phone calls before any of the very long multi-day to weeks of breathing support intubation that followed where he told me it may be good-bye if they can't get the 3 foot of incision to close as in previous surgeries.
One surgery in 2015 Rob went to sleep Christmas Eve on emergency when his breathing stopped from an unstable upper-neck and brain stem - after 6 weeks and 3 separate surgeries to investigate, operate and close Rob told me they briefly woke him from life support for the last surgery and he said he needed to speak with a Chaplain as he didn't feel he woud wake up from this last surgery it was too much. After a extremely close call he woke in February when his life-saving nuerosurgeon said his neck was an injustice and they weren't sure I would make it from the incision not closing from servere Osteomylitis (bone infection from MRSA).
Reason for Money Request
With the spine infection presently at bay, Rob can now have nerve block injections in his neck to control pain by numbing nerves in his head and neck with a drug similar to Novacaine dentists use and may in the future be able to avail himself of other measures to improve life.
The injections are expensive, however, and medicare is not currently covering them. This is being worked out, I understand, but currently he has run out of the necessary funds to mitigate pain and continue treatment. Bills are mounting rapidly. April through June 2017 Rob had to be readmitted to the local hospital for a central line-delivered antibiotics for multiple infections that flared up again in his face and nerve behind ear, cervical spine and in both feet. During the 43 days hospitalized he continued running his online fishing charter business that has always helped pay bills.
In June after he came home he went to a pain specialist who was a God send in the hospital donating his time and services to do in hospital nerve blocks. Now visting his doctor 1-2 times a week for nerve blocks until he can see a neurologist a major error by Medicare caused him to have to pay out-of-pocket for 20% of all medical practitioners he sees for his neck. He was told it would take 4-6 months to fix the mistake. He has exhausted all resources and even contacted Congress Darrel Issa to expedite the fix. He was at this time only able to get a small refund already spent on his neck. He has too much pride to ask himself so I am asking for this help for him.
