Robert's Fight and Recovery

Donation protected
On December 28th, 2019, army veteran Robert Gurau was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, two hours away from his home in Victoria, Texas. He was displaying some symptoms of a stroke; however, on arrival at the hospital Robert was discovered to have arteriovenous malformation. An AVM rupture in his brain caused bleeding in the brain. Robert has been in a coma since December 28th. He has received multiple surgeries in order to help him recover.

Throughout this time that Robert has been in this condition, he has made progress. He had surgery done to remove a part of his skull in order to relieve some of the pressure from his brain. This part of his skull could be cryogenically frozen for around six to nine months. The swelling went down in a month, they had to put the part of his skull back in much sooner than anticipated. His condition remained stable and was moved from the ICU unit to the intermediate care in a matter of weeks. From there they moved him to acute care. Robert opened his eyes a little around January 14, approximately two weeks since he first went into the coma. He has been opening his eyes more and more each day.

Robert's wife and daughter, Stella and Esther Gurau are his immediate family. Stella has been staying with Robert in the hospital since the day it happened. She is on unpaid family medical leave from her job as elementary school teacher. Currently they have no inflow of income. Robert is covered by ten percent Veteran's Administration's health insurance, and it does not cover medical costs or rehab. The hospital is currently ready to discharge Robert to a nursing home/rehab facility. His family requests the funds to be able to take care of Robert’s medical and rehabilitation needs.

Stella has been diligently working with Robert's physical therapy daily as well as consistently reading the Bible to him. This is a very taxing situation for her both physically and mentally. Robert is a man who loves the Lord with all his heart and has been keeping his eyes open especially when the Bible is read to him. Before December 28th, Robert was memorizing Proverbs 3:1-2. "My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you." We pray that the Lord will add years of life to Robert.

Right before this traumatic experience, the family was preparing to send their daughter, Esther, to the University of Texas at Austin as a transfer student for the Spring. Rather than deferring her admission, Esther has decided to continue with her plan of attending UT. She is currently in her fifth week there. Esther and her mom communicate daily.

Stella and Esther along with family and friends are continually praying for Robert's recovery. Prayers and any donation is appreciated, no matter how big or how small. If you are unable to donate at this time, we ask for your prayers for Robert's complete and speedy recovery.

We may be going through a valley right now, but God knew the end to our story before it even began. Thank you!
