Road to LPGA via Australia

Hi! Thanks so much for checking out my page and taking the time to get to know a little bit about me and my dream of pursuing a career as a professional golfer.

My name is Robyn Doig, I’m 25 years old and I was born and raised in Seaforth, Ontario, Canada. Two years ago I graduated from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, where I competed on a golf scholarship for four years. Go Knights!!

I turned professional in August 2015 and have been on quite a journey so far with many ups and downs. Since December through March is the off season here in North America, most serious golfers head to the southern hemisphere to keep their game sharp. Last year was my first trip to Austrailia where I played on the Australian Ladies Professional Golf Tour and I am excited to say that I have been accepted to go back this year. Tournaments run from the end of January until March. Only 35 international members are invited each year so I am so excited to be going back! I had a great experience last year and now that I know what to expect I'll be more relaxed and comfortable on the course.

My Dad, Cam, will be coming with me again so both of us can use our experinece from last year to improve this time around. Dad has been my swing coach since I began golfing at a young age and is a huge supporter of my ongoing journey. We often work on my swing by sending videos and chatting on the phone because the majority of my tournaments take place out of the country and at a time when he cannot leave his business commitments. We both learned a lot about my game and swing when we had the opportunity to work face to face with each other for over a month straight last year. I'm really looking forward to having him along again this year and continuting to learn and grow!

Although I am excited and positive about this opportunity, I realize it is also going to be an expensive journey. I work and save as much as I can but the costs of starting out as a young golf professional are extremely high. However, I really believe that competing on the Australian LPGA and gaining more international experience will make a significant difference to my success.

I have listed below a break down of my estimated costs for competing in Australia which is reflective of my fundraising goal. I greatly appreciate any financial assistance you can offer and I assure you that every dollar collected will be responsibly directed to my golf career.

Want to learn more about me and my story? Continue reading below. You can also follow my journey on Facebook or by sending an email to [email redacted] so I can add you to my contact list.

Thank you so much for your support!!

Growing up
In the 1960’s my Grandfather and his brother decided to transform their family farm into a golf course which is now our family business. Because of their decision I was able to take up golf at the age of three and since then I’ve been on an amazing ride earning the title of Toronto Star Women’s Amateur Champion in 2012, The Ontario Women’s Amateur Champion in 2014, and Ontario Women’s Amateur Match Play Champion in both 2013 and 2014.

Life Lessons
Golf has taught me about hard work, dedication, time management, sacrifice, and many more skills which I have used throughout all aspects of my life. Growing up my parents encouraged me to be well rounded and so I competed on a variety of sports teams such as volleyball, soccer, tennis, badminton, and of course, being Canadian, hockey. I played the piano and the French horn in the high school band and was a member of students council, all while maintaining excellent grades.

Post Secondary
After high school I decided to focus all of my time on golf. I earned a golf scholarship to the University of Central Florida where I majored in Sports Business Management and Communications and I also took a Minor in Coaching. I completed my Bachelors of Applied Science with a 3.6 GPA. While representing UCF for four years our team achieved a conference championship and then I knew I wanted to continue my golfing career. I turned Professional in August 2015.

Professional Journey
In 2017 I travelled to Australia for the first time to compete on the Australian Ladies Professional Golf Tour. It took a few weeks to get adjusted but I settled down after that and posted some decent scores in some good events. I had participated in the qualifier for the Austrlain Victorian Open but unfortunately was not successful. A majority of the tournaments were Pro-Am style events and I was able to build some great connections through those events. I also learned how to compete while interacting with the other mmebers of my group (most who had never played in a Pro-Am before, let a lone with a professional golfer). It was defnitely a different experience but one I learned to enjoy.

I have made two attempts at Stage 1 of LPGA qualifying school. I learned from my first experience and although I improved, I just missed advancing on my second attempt by two shots. For those of you who don't know, in order to get to the LPGA Tour, you must advance through three qualifying tournaments. Those who do not advance can compete on the Symetra Tour and reach the LPGA based on earnings throughout the year. Competing in Australia in the off season will help prepare me for the Symetra Tour which runs from March to October.

I knew when I began that this was not going to be an easy feat but I will continue working hard so that I can make my dream of competing on the LPGA tour and having a successful career as a professional golfer a reality. I have had the most amazing support from family and friends so far and I hope that you understand that every little bit makes a huge difference!

Thanks again for your time!

Sincerely,

Robyn Doig
