RLSS Boscombe Lifeguards

RLSS Boscombe Lifeguards is a voluntary beach lifeguard club which has been running since 1993, operating within the overstand building at Honeycombe Chine, Boscombe.
The club provides safety cover from this base mostly during the summer months. Their services are called upon by various organisations, including the council, local open water clubs and suchlike. They provide safety cover at events such as the Bournemouth Air Festival, firework nights, open water races (swimming/canoe etc) triathlons amongst others .Fully qualified beach lifeguards (and support) patrol on foot, on boards or in the rescue RIB “Zulu”. A huge part of the club is also providing water safety education to youngsters, and children often navigate their way from “rookie” beginnings to qualified beach lifeguards over time.
Training takes place year round, with pool training over the winter months and beach training April onwards. As a result of covid 19, much of 2020’s training had to be put on hold ,as did all the events that the club would normally provide support to. This means that the club has not managed to gain vital contributions from the organisations mentioned above. These funds are extremely important for the running of the club. The club has to pay for pool hire, equipment, maintenance of the rescue boat, fuel, the list is endless. We are hoping to raise £1000. And hope we can use this towards equipment….drysuits are high on our wish list to keep boat handlers warm whilst they cover events, often for many hours at a time.
I personally have been a club member since childhood, and firmly believe that my career in the ambulance service has a direct link back to my formative years being in this organisation, for many members the club has been their first step towards working in the emergency/public services, leisure industry etc.
Without voluntary clubs such as Boscombe lifeguards it would be impossible to run many events around the Poole Bay area and I urge any of my friends that have benefitted from the club over the years (swimmers, runners, canoeists ,beachgoers) ,or those that have themselves been moulded by something similar in their youth, to please help keep this great club going, to patrol for many more years to come.
Thankyou
