Rites of Passage Conference UK 2018 - 6ix to the Brits
As a United Way founding agency, WoodGreen Community Services continuously seeks and develops innovative solutions to critical social needs.
Rites of Passage (ROP) is a process of maturation and personal development, practiced in many indigenous cultures. Given the specific challenges faced by youth of African descent in Toronto, WoodGreen’s ROP process, modeled after the Akan tradition of West Afrika, offers resources, guidance and support, as they move from one life stage to the next. Participants who have emerged from this process have voiced that their engagement has had a long-term positive impacts on their values, perception of self, increased level of discipline and their commitment to family and community.
In August 2018, New Initiatives Community Organization, will be hosting a Rites of Passage Conference in London, England, called "Indaba" (popularly referred to as gathering in the Zulu language). We are excited that 13 ROP youth graduates from Toronto are invited to participate and present sessions at the conference.
So far the young people have been working hard on a number of fundraising initiatives, but they still need $8000 to realize their goal. The funds will support their travel and accommodation costs.
Thank you for your support!!!
