While this isn't a curable disease, it is treatable. With the proper treatment and advancement of medicine through technology there are more options than ever.
My mother has been through a chemo regimen and the surgeons are preparing her for surgery in a month and are optimistic about the results. The treatment will also include a one-time experimental procedure known as Hipec, which I've learned stands for Hyperthermic Intraperineal Chemotherapy. While I understand this is an experimental treatment and still in the trial phase, based on initial test results, my mother's specialists believe she will benefit greatly from this one time treatment during surgery. Not only will Hipec help reduce the likelihood of new growths post removal of her tumors, but it will also help with her metastasized peritoneal spots. I’m hoping this gives her some additional years to continue fighting for herself like she has fought for us our entire lives.
The cost of the Hipec component of her surgery is $5,000, which unfortunately medicare and supplemental insurance won't cover, and as the amount is more than half of her yearly social security income it is far beyond her means to cover personally.
This treatment, since not being covered by insurance, is required to be paid in full prior to surgery. I'm pleading with friends and family to donate anything possible to help with the cost of this life-changing procedure. And with any luck, any donations over the $5000 will go toward her ever increasing hospital bills.
