Ride for Reproductive Justice

Donation protected
We started our bicycle tour across the country with goals for ourselves. Asher was getting married, turning thirty, and moving to Philadelphia and wanted a way to mark and process these transitions. Shelley wanted get to know herself and her body again after a long stent of academic rigors and hopefully, find a position as a PA (which she did!!).

While on this wild journey, we’ve had many hours to reflect - on our own lives and on the ways in which our lives intersect with others. In every state, people have welcomed us into their communities and homes and shared stories that have stolen, and sometimes broken, our hearts. We’ve been moved by the generosity and trust we have received along the way to dedicate the rest of our trip to a cause larger than ourselves.

From day one of our travels, we have read countless historic accounts of the inhuman transgressions that white settlement brought upon the indigenous people of what is now the United States. No amount of reparations can make right the violence and theft committed against Native people, but it is nevertheless important to us to take action and honor the people whose land we ride across.

We have chosen to ride for an organization that is led by and for Native people and ask you today to support us in our goal of raising $1,000 during the last 1,000 miles of this journey. We are raising funds for Indigenous Women Rising (IWR), an organization dedicated to reproductive justice for all Native American people. Asher had the privilege of getting to know Rachael Lorenzo, the founder of IWR, during Western States Center's leadership cohort for social justice organizers. In the couple of years they’ve known each other, Rachael has blown Asher away—growing IWR from a dream to a powerful, inspiring, and effective organization. We are honored to dedicate the last 1,000 miles of our pedaling to IWR.

Please read the text below from IWR and consider donating to help us reach our goal!

“When you give to Indigenous Women Rising, you’re helping:

-Native folx pay for abortion access, including their procedures, gas, food, and childcare;

-Native families engage with each other about sexual health, healthy relationships, and pregnancy related care in a culturally humble way;

-Pregnant, Native families who want to continue their pregnancies receive the culturally humble support they need to have a healthy pregnancy and birth;

-Native youth now have a culturally humble and medically accurate text hotline to answer their sexual health and puberty questions;

-Indigenous Women Rising guide healthcare providers face their implicit biases so they can increase their quality of care and improve the health outcomes of their Native American and Indigenous patients.

Twenty-one Native people have had their abortions and related costs covered by the IWR abortion fund and nearly a thousand Native American youth in New Mexico have received sexual health education from IWR. Native and Indigenous peoples are some of the most underserved peoples in the county- give to a growing collective of Indigenous and queer womxn who strive to ensure Native families have the support they need and deserve to not just live but to thrive.”
