Justice for Chevy: Reward grows for Pace horse shot, killed

PACE, Fla. (WEAR) — In an unthinkable act of animal cruelty, a local woman's horse was shot dead in a pasture on Diamond Street and Jernigan Road.

It happened the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 25th, and Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating.

Neighbors in the area found bullet casings for a large caliber weapon in the middle of the road. Whoever pulled the trigger had a clean shot, straight into Chevy's pasture.

"The blood trail went this way, it led around this way," said Beth Nelson. "Then, he walked around the edge of this fence right here, and then to the barn."

And that's where Beth Nelson found Chevy. Her five-year-old horse was dead, with a gunshot wound behind his front quarters. A sign she says could prove the person behind the trigger knew what they were doing.

"It hit him right behind the leg, like a hunter," said Beth. "I can't sleep at night knowing that he got shot and he was out here by himself, what he must have felt, or how long that he suffered not knowing what was going on."

Aside from a few bullet casings, Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Deputies don't have much to go on. No one saw anything, but a few neighbors did report hearing shots ring out around 2:20 am. Danny Ferrell is one of them.

"I just thought someone was shooting at armadillos," said Danny. "They're really bad around here."

"I'm heartbroken," Danny said about when he found out Chevy was the target. "Somebody needs to go to jail for that."

Beth is counting on neighbors like Danny, and their surveillance cameras, to solve this case, and find justice for Chevy.

"If they can go back and look through their surveillance and just see if they see anything weird along that time frame, we might be able to pin it down to a vehicle, or pin it down to somebody riding a bike, because people pass by here non-stop all day long," said Beth. "Bikes, walking, cars, it's a heavily trafficked area."

Chevy was buried here, Wednesday. The goal now is to find out who's responsible for his senseless killing.

Beth, friends, and neighbors have raised $1,200 in reward money for any information leading to an arrest.
