Once upon a time, a school librarian from Alaska was visiting her hometown of Paoli, Indiana, and found a For Sale sign in front of her favorite building, the town’s original library. She determined to move heaven and earth, if necessary, to buy the building. So, one hundred years after it was constructed (in 1918 as a Carnegie Library), the building began a new life. She named the building after her mother and aunt, Majel and Grace, farm girls who grew up in Paoli.
The Majel-Grace hosts classes, yoga, gatherings, support groups, concerts, art, gatherings and dinners. The works of Annemarie Mahler, an accomplished artist, hang on the walls as a longterm installation and the HEALING ARTS CENTER continues on the ground floor.
Now, the Once-Upon-a-Time (now retired) Librarian, is taking steps to preserve and restore the Once-Upon-a-Time Library, in ways that reflect its architectural style (American Craftsman). In the spring of 2020, the work will begin with the entrance and front steps. The picture shows the building from a few years ago - and shows what it can look like again. Since then, age and weather have taken their toll, crumbling the cement and leaving behind broken steps.
The building is in the heart of the town, and has the potential to be one of the crown jewels of Paoli’s Historic District. The plan is for the Majel-Grace to continue to be an asset to the community, now and for the next hundred years!
The first stage of restoration work is planned to begin in March. Please chip in so we can start on schedule. Thank you!
