FLORENCE RECOVERY FOR WOMEN & FEMMES

As many know, Hurricane Florence has devastated the Cape Fear region. Wilmington is our home, and the home of many other inspirational women, femmes, and gender variant folks who have already been on top of gathering supplies and volunteering their spaces and time in order to help those in need.
Unfortunately, the most vulnerable population in natural disasters is poor women and femmes and their children, especially those of color. These populations also happen to be one of the most overlooked in hurricane relief efforts. In an effort to help those most vulnerable in natural disasters, Athenian Press (a certified 501c3 nonprofit) and Deanna-Gabrielle Louise Alicea of Evolved Femme Healing hope to coordinate with organizations in Wilmington and beyond who work closely with women and femmes on a daily basis so they can raise funds and buy supplies that many drives omit from donation lists.
In addition, we will be opening as many safe, clean spaces as possible for women, femmes, and gender variant folks, as well as their children, to relax, eat, bathe, etc. without having to fear for their safety.
Some of these folks may be homeless or exhausted, or both, so it's important that these specific supplies and spaces are provided for them in this time of need. Wilmington is a high-risk area for sex-trafficking and drug abuse, so making sure that vulnerable folks are safe in situations where their vulnerability can be taken advantage of is crucial.
Several folks have lost everything they have due to the storm. The supplies we will purchase will consist of (1) temporary safe housing; (2) feminine and child-specific things, such as pads, tampons, feminine-scented deodorant, toilet paper, travel sized toiletries, hair products (particularly for women of color), nontoxic cleaning supplies, baby wipes, diapers, underwear, socks, sunscreen, dental hygiene products, washcloths, first aid items, school supplies, and canvas bags (for carrying their items); (3) supplies for trans and GNC folks such as binders, unscented or masculine deodorant/toiletries, makeup and razors, tweezers, wigs; and (4) general hurricane relief needs such as tarps, blankets, towels, laundry detergent, and nonperishable food (including baby food).
We will need funds for these supplies by the end of September. The dedicated funds will ONLY be used for hurricane relief efforts and those affected most by the hurricane. Please understand the gravity of the situation and how, despite their best efforts, many organizations fail to provide the essential products and spaces needed for these populations in situations like Hurricane Florence. We are here to fill that gap. Any amount helps!
