GAP: Ghana Adolescent Project

BACKGROUND
Ghana, located on the west coast of Africa, has failed to create a sex-positive environment; rather focuses on abstinence and fear-based or negative perspectives on sexual education. The majority of high school students reported they’ve not learned about topics in categories related to contraception, gender, sexual reproductive health rights, and interpersonal skills. Only 8% of high school students reported learning about all of the topics that constitute a comprehensive curriculum according to international guidelines.
FOCUS
The focus of GAP is to introduce and provide adolescents in Ghana with evidence-based comprehensive sexual education.
In the efforts to improve adolescents' access to high-quality information and services; in June 2021, GAP will be working with 30 adolescents of High School ages to receive comprehensive sexual education, build advocacy and awareness skills.
GAP will be teaching according to international guidelines and focusing on topics such as modern contraception, sexual reproductive health rights, and more. Also, GAP will be focusing on using adolescent peer-to-peer education methods for the training. Peer education has been shown beneficial in improving knowledge and acceptance of information among peers.
FUNDS
Funds raised will go towards purchasing Student Workbook materials and supplies, and stipend students who participate and complete the training.
