Replace knackered old public cricket nets
Donation protected
I've lived in the Bournemouth and Poole area most of my life. I'm a cricket lover.
30 years ago when growing up in the area, I remember cycling across town to use the nearest public cricket nets. Most of cricket nets available to the public from my childhood are gone now - the last remaining one is at Branksome recreation ground in Poole, Dorset.
I'm passing my love for the game onto the next generation, my 9 year old son. We travel the 4 miles across town to reach the only cricket nets available to the general public in a conurbation of nearly 400,000 people
The current nets are in a very sorry state of repair and need replacing urgently. There are multiple holes in the netting. There aren't many pegs left to hold the netting down.
Generally, the state of the nets make it feel like a neglected, run-down facility.
Hopefully the videos and photos will capture what a sorry state of repair the nets are in.
I'm hoping that with brand new netting, it will be a vibrant advert for the game of cricket.
I was chatting to a Poole council groundsman whilst he was kindly painting some popping crease markers. He told me that the nets are over 10 years old and were donated to the council by Bournemouth cricket club.
The aim of this campaign is to raise the funds needed to purchase replacement netting. The equipment will then be donated to the council for continued use by the public.
The current nets will be taken down for the year in September 2019 and put up again in April 2020.
I'm a strong believer in community action and encouraging sport for all, especially the children in our town. This is why I'm asking the larger community for help rather than expecting someone else, the council, whoever, to come up with the funds.
I've been in touch with the council and they have no plans to replace the nets. They are willing to accept the donation.
Thank you
