Remy’s New Hips

Remy's Story:

Remington "Remy" was welcomed into our family on Sunday, April 26, 2020. We saw a post about a sweet 6 month old Golden Doodle who needed a new home in North Carolina. We learned that Remy's family was needing to rehome him due to his owner having Breast Cancer. His owner had multiple surgeries shortly after getting him, and he was not getting the attention he needed.

We immediately contacted his owner and drove 5 hours to pick him up. When we pulled into their driveway, we were welcomed by a big black ball of fluff who hobbled up to meet us. We knew from the first instant that he would be coming back to Georgia with us. Remy said his goodbyes, and we headed back to his forever home.

Once we arrived home, Remy eagerly met his new brothers Ruger and Teddy, who seemed a little skeptical at first but quickly warmed up to their new pal. We then ALL piled into the bed thinking everything was perfect.........

On Monday, April 26, 2020 we noticed that Remy dragged his back paws when he walked. After further examination, it appeared that Remy's back legs were abnormally close together when he stood, and appeared to be bowed-out (almost pigeon toed). We became even more concerned when we watched him running in the yard with the other dogs. He could not keep up and his stride was awkward.  We later learned that because of the his past owners illness, he was kept mostly outside and on a runner. This certainly did not allow for proper muscular development.

We made an appointment for him the same day to get a check-up, and have his hips examined.  The vet informed us after his examination that Remy had a concerning amount of laxity in his hips.  We were told that he had a chance of healing on his own with limited exercise and dieting. The only way to know for sure would be to have x-ray imaging of his hips. We left the vet's office upset and very concerned for our new puppy.

We reached out to another vet for a second opinion. She offered to see him the next morning and perform the x-ray imaging. After dropping him off for his appointment, we received a phone call from the vet, who gave us some devastating news.  She informed us that our 6 MONTH OLD PUPPY had the worst case of Hip Displaysia  she had ever seen. We were given the option of managing his pain until the condition worsened to the point he could no longer walk, or treating him with  orthopedic surgery to correct the alignment of his pelvis and hip joints.  The results of this type of surgery are highly successful, with many patients able to live full and pain-free lives.  If the procedure is not performed he will almost certainly lose his ability to walk or stand, and have  absolutely no quality of life.

At this point we reached out to Adopt a Golden Atlanta, which is a local rescue group that takes in dogs, treats there illnesses, and adopts them to loving homes.  We discussed our options with Adopt a Golden to ensure the best possible life for Remy. We were devastated at the notion of having to turn Remy over, because he had quickly became a member of the family and stolen our hearts. Adopt a Golden Atlanta offered to send his file over to Blue Pearl Animal Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia for a consultation with Dr. Cross, a renowned Orthopedic Surgeon.

On Thursday, April 30, 2020 I was contacted by Adopt a Golden Atlanta who had spoken to Dr. Cross after viewing Remy's file and x-rays. Dr. Cross determined that Remy was a candidate for corrective hip surgery at Blue Pearl Animal Hospital.  I was elated at the prospect of Remy being able to lead a normal, full, and above all PAIN FREE LIFE!!

The only downside to this procedure is the financial cost of this procedure. The quote for surgery is $9,500.

We want nothing more than to give Remy the opportunity to be a happy care-free puppy that he so desperately deserves. This surgery will be the best option for that to become a reality. That is why we are here,  as we do not have the funds to pay for this procedure on our own. Adopt a Golden Atlanta gave us some even better news when they offered to help raise funds for Remy's procedure. The even greater part is that HE WILL REMAIN IN OUR HOME AND APART OF THE FAMILY!!

I am humbly asking for any and all donations to help fund Remy's procedure.  Remy and our entire family would be eternally grateful for any amount you can spare. We know that $1 $5 and $10 can add up very quickly. If you cannot donate at this time, we graciously ask for you  to share this fundraiser to your friends and family. Good vibes, thoughts, and prayers are also welcomed as this will be a long and hard road to recovery for Remy. I will be setting the goal for this fundraiser a little over the actual price of the procedure in case there is extra costs or charges that arise during or after the surgery and the recovery period. Any remaining funds will be donated to Adopt a Golden Atlanta. We will be working our "tails" off to get the funds together as quickly as possible to ensure Remy gets the help he deserves.  The sooner the procedure is completed, the sooner Remy gets to enjoy being a playful puppy.

Thank you so much for your time and reading this far into Remy's story. It would mean so much to our family to be able to get Remy the treatment and procedure he needs. We will be posting updates, pictures, and videos throughout this journey, so be sure to check back for regular updates.

Love,

Remy, Ruger, Teddy, Rory, and Mari Barber
