Over the last decades, oil spills have posed critical environmental damage, destroying soil and water biosystems. From oil drilling to refinery, every step of this process can lead to irreparable consequences. Nowadays, oil-dependent economies need to take urgent actions to mitigate those consequences. Since available mechanical and chemical methods have low effectiveness and high toxicity for organisms, there is an acute need for safe alternatives.
We are a team of ambitious students that will be working on creating a safe method with the help of bacteria! These microorganisms that are invisible to our eyes have great potential to mitigate the impacts of oil pollution. You might have heard that scientists were able to program bacteria for a specific purpose. So our team wants to modify safe bacteria (P. putida) that will efficiently clean oil spills
Who are we?
We are a team of undergraduate students from Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan, participating in the iGEM 2021 Competition. This year our team, supervised by Dr. Enrico Marsili and Dr. Obina Ajunwa, is eager to develop a new project focused on oil remediation and recovery.
Where will we spend our funding?
To implement a project of this magnitude and present it at the Giant Jamboree 2021, we are raising money to buy reagents and laboratory equipment. Among them are raising awareness about the environmental issues in Kazakhstan and making education more accessible for students from rural areas. For these purposes, we need your help!
